The practice of worshiping many deities in Hinduism has been going on since ancient times. Pre preparation

Once the required quantity of wood is collected, three special chariots are made for Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra in a traditional manner on the auspicious occasion of the holy Akshaya Tritiya.

Description of the three chariots

The names of the three chariots made on the occasion of Rath Yatra vary in their size and type. The name of the chariot of Lord Jagannath is Nandighosh. This chariot is 23 cubits high and has 16 wheels. The name of the charioteer of Nandighosh chariot is Matali. Similarly, the chariot of Lord Balabhadra is called Taladhwaja and its height is 22 cubits.

It has fourteen wheels. The charioteer of this chariot is known by the name of Sudyumna. Goddess Subhadra sits on a chariot named Darpadalan. His chariot is 21 cubits high and has twelve wheels. Arjuna is present as the charioteer of this chariot. Each chariot is decorated with different colored clothes. There is a flag on the top of each chariot.

Travel details

The servants get ready to perform their duties from the early morning on the day of Rath Yatra. Rath installation and invocation ends after timely completion of Mangal Aarti, Surya Puja and such events in Shri Mandir on that day. Later, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra traditionally travel from Ratna Throne to the chariot.

This journey is called ‘Pahandi BJ’. The view of Pahandi time is very impressive. First Lord Sudarshan climbs on the chariot of Devi Subhadra and then Balabhadra, Subhadra and Jagannath sit on their respective chariots. The first and foremost servant of Shri Jagannath, Gajapati Maharaj completes his service in all the three chariots. After this the Rath Yatra is started by the devotees.

Strong ropes attached to the chariot are pulled by the devotees present. The chariot is brought towards the Gundicha temple. First the chariot of Lord Balabhadra, then Goddess Subhadra and finally Lord Jagannath is pulled. On reaching Gundicha temple, all the deities are taken inside the temple. Like Shri Mandir, Gods also have different policies in Gundicha temple. Lord Balabhadra, Goddess Subhadra and Lord Jagannath spend seven days at the Gundicha temple.

All the Gods reside in this Gundicha temple till the tenth. On the day of Dashami again all the Gods go on the chariot. And all the devotees drag the chariots and take them to the temple. The return to this Sri temple of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra is called Bahuda Yatra. On the day of Ekadashi, Lord Balabhadra, Goddess Subhadra and Lord Jagannath and all the deities are adorned with gold on the chariot. After this all the Gods are taken to the temple and the Rath Yatra ends.
