Srinivasa Ramanujan, the greatest mathematician of modern India, was born on 22 December 1887 in the state of Tamil Nadu. Ramanujan developed a special fondness for mathematics in his childhood. When he was in the third form, one day the teacher of mathematics while teaching said, “If three bananas are distributed to three persons, each will get one banana. If 1000 bananas are distributed among 1000 persons, then each will get only one banana. It is thus proved that if any number is divided by the same number, the result will be ‘one’.

Ramanujan stood up and asked, “Will the result be the same even if zero is divided by zero?”

When Ramanujan was studying in the matriculation class, at the same time he got a book of mathematics from the library of the local college, ‘Synopsis of Elementary Results in Pure Mathematics’ The author was ‘George Carr.’ A total of 6165 formulas of higher mathematics were given in this book. . Ramanujan proved all the formulas in a few days without any help. While solving this book, he made many new discoveries. Later when Ramanujan went to England, his mathematical knowledge was more advanced than the then mathematical knowledge.

Ramanujan’s methods of deriving mathematical formulas were so complex that even mathematics journals were unable to publish them at all. His first research paper on Bernoulli numbers which was published in the Indian Mathematical Society was returned three times by the editor.

Ramanujan’s talent was rightly recognized by Professor Hardy of Cambridge University. He gave them due recognition and respect. Later both of them published many research papers together..

One of Ramanujan’s major mathematical works is the discovery of the formula for finding the number of divisions of a number. For example the total number of divisions of the number 5 is 7 thus: 5, 4+1, 3+2, 3+1.1, 2+2+1, 2+1+1+1, 1+1+1+1 +1. The number of divisions of any number can be found from Ramanujan’s formula.
