Tulsidas Essay in Hindi
Tulsidas was a Hindu poet-saint who is counted among the greatest poets of Hindi, Indian and world literature. He was famous for his devotion towards Lord Rama.
And he is best known as the author of the epic ‘Ramcharitmanas’, a rewrite of the Sanskrit ‘Ramayana’ based on the life of Rama in the local Awadhi. He is also considered the author of ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ in praise of Hanuman, an ardent devotee of Rama.
Tulsidas was believed to be the reincarnation of Saint Valmiki who was the author of the original ‘Ramayana’. A prolific writer and composer of many popular works, Tulsidas, however, gave only a few facts about his own life in his works.
Much of what is known about him is known mainly from a commentary on the ‘Bhaktamaal’ composed by his contemporary Nabhadas and the ‘Bhaktirasbodhini’ composed by Priyadas.

There are many legends about the birth and early life of Tulsidas and it is believed that he met Hanuman, and had a vision of Lord Rama by his grace.
The Sankatmochan temple dedicated to Hanuman in Varanasi is said to have stood at the place where he had seen Hanuman. Tulsidas was an acclaimed poet and the influence of his works is still reflected in the art, culture and society in India.
Early life of Tulsidas
Tulsidas was born on the seventh day of Shukla Paksha, the seventh day of Shukla Paksha of the lunar Hindu calendar month Shravan (July-August). It belongs to 13 August 1532 of the Gregorian calendar.
Although three places are mentioned as his birthplace, most scholars identify this place with Sukar Kshetra Soron, district Kasganj in Uttar Pradesh, a village on the banks of the river Ganges.
In 2012 Sukarkhet Soron was officially declared as the birthplace of Tulsi Das by the Government of Uttar Pradesh. His parents were Hulsi and Atmaram Dubey.
Most sources identify him as a Saryuparen Brahmin of the Parashara gotra (lineage), although some sources claim that he was a Kanyakubja or Sanadhya Brahmin.
There is a difference of opinion among biographers regarding the year of birth of Tulsidas. Many sources rely on the account of Veni Madhav Das in the original Gosain Charita, which gives the year of birth of Tulsidas as Vikrami Samvat 1554 (1497 CE).
These sources include Shivlal Pathak, popular versions of Ramcharitmanas, Edwin Greaves, Hanuman Prasad Poddar, Ramanand Saraswati, Ayodhyanath Sharma, Ramchandra Shukla, Narayandas and Rambhadracharya.
A second group of biographers led by Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras and Sir George Grierson gives the year as Vikram 1568 (1511 CE). These biographers include Ramakrishna Gopal Bhandarkar, Ramgoolam Dwivedi, James Lochtefeld, Swami Sivananda and others.
The year 1497 appears in many extant biographies in India and in popular culture. Biographers who disagree with this year argue that this makes Tulsidas’ life span equal to 126 years, which in their opinion is unlikely, if not impossible.
On the contrary Ramchandra Shukla says that the age of 126 years is not impossible for a Mahatma (Great Soul) like Tulsidas. According to the year of birth of Tulsidas in popular culture, the Indian government and provincial governments celebrated the 500th birth anniversary of Tulsidas in the year 1997 CE.
